Azerbaijani language (azərbaycan dili) is the language of the Azerbaijanis. It is the official language of Azerbaijan as well as one of the officially recognized languages in Dagestan (a part of Russia). It is also spoken in Iran and Georgia. The total number of speakers comes to around 25-30 million people. Azerbaijani is considered a synthetic language because it has been significantly influenced by Persian and Arabic. It’s an interesting fact that, in the course of the 20th century, Azerbaijani changed its alphabet four times. Currently, it can be written in three different writing systems: Arabic alphabet in Iran, Latin alphabet in Azerbaijan, and Cyrillic alphabet in Dagestan (Russia).
