The Bosnian language belongs to the South Slavic group of languages and is considered an ethnolect of Serbo-Croatian. Bosnian is the language of the Muslim population of the former Yugoslavia, predominantly distributed across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Within the Bosnian language there exists a broad representation of Turkish, Arabic, and Persian loanwords, which became entrenched during the time of the Ottoman Empire’s rule. This language is spoken by over a million people. Interestingly, at present, there exists a tendency within the Bosnian language for both Croatian and Serbian forms to be used. The literary Bosnian language does not distinguish between Serbian and Croatian.
