Slovak is the language of the Slovak people and a member of the family of Slavic languages. Together with Czech it makes up the Czech-Slovak subgroup of the West Slavic language group. It is mostly spoken in Slovakia where it is recognized as the official language. It is the third most spoken among the West Slavic languages – behind Polish and Czech – with over 5 million speakers.
Slovak is divided into three different dialects: Western Slovak, Central Slovak and Eastern Slovak, which differ significantly from each other. Interestingly, until the 18th century the literary language used by Slovaks was Czech, but in the middle of the 19th century, a literary form of Slovak was created based on the Central Slovak dialect.
