Kyrgyz, the official language the Kyrgyz Republic (or simply Kyrgyzstan) belongs to the group of Turkic languages. The total number of speakers in Kyrgyzstan is relatively high at about four million people. The written language has an interesting history: until 1928 it was written using the Arabic alphabet, then from 1928 to 1940 it briefly changed to Latin alphabet before finally switching to Cyrillic, which is how it is still written today. Nouns in Kyrgyz do not have gender but can take six different cases. Also of note is the language’s highly developed lexicon relating to animal husbandry and equestrian sport.
