Catalan, the language of Catalonia, is a language belonging to the Occitano-Romance subgroup of Romance languages in the Indo-European language family. Catalan is spoken by nearly 11 million people in Catalonian territories situated in Spain, France, Andorra and Italy.
Catalan is the sixth most spoken Romance language. Of all languages spoken in the European Union, it ranks 14th, and in the world, 80th.
In contrast to its fellow Romance languages, Catalan has not seven, but eight vowel sounds, and uses a definite article before names.
Interestingly, the longest speech in the world, as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records, was given by Louis Colet, a resident of Perpignan, France, and was spoken mostly in Catalan.
